It’s becoming a bit of a comeback season and we’re enjoying every moment of it; especially when were treated to the soul-searching musings of an artist like Speech Debelle.
The 2009 Mercury Music Prize winner readies the way for her eagerly anticipated third album, Tantil Before I Breathe, with the Miss Baby Sol assisted “The Work”. Having taken 4 years out to grow and concentrate on her other passions (You may have caught her tantalised the nation with her inventive recipes as a semi-finalist on Celebrity Masterchef; or curating a moving exhibition of art by prisoners for the Koestler Trust’s The Strength and Vulnerability Bunker at London’s iconic Southbank Centre in 2013), Speech re-emerges with renewed vigour and an evolved outlook on life.
“I realised I had to be broken for the light to come in,” she reflects, “and that process is the blossoming to me, a form of expansion. This song is about waking up and being grateful for the opportunity to f**k some more things up, cry and then laugh.”
Her earnest realisations pour out over melodic keys and rousing instrumentation. With Nick Trepka on production duty and having been co-written with Neil Cowley (Adele, Emeli Sandé) we think Speech is on to a winner with this next helping.
